LA’s Grand Central Market

“They call Los Ang-hal-les the city of angels,” drawls the narrator in the opening line of The Big Lebowski.  “I didn’t find it to be that, exactly.”  It’s true… Angels, CA is full of all kinds of interesting people, and is well-known for being the intersection of glamor and grit.  I actually honestly expected to hate the place when I moved to southern California for the first time; if the media and the movies are to be believed, why LA is nothing but smog, crime, and traffic.  But I’ve come to learn that because of (and sometimes in spite of) the incredible diversity of people and culture in the LA metro area, it really can be a fantastic city for just about anything you want to do.

One of my favorite places to hang out in the city is Grand Central Market.  Tucked away in the block defined by Hill, Broadway, 3rd, and 4th streets a short walk from Pershing Square, GCM is neither as big nor as cosmopolitain as its rather more well-known downtown street market - Seattle’s Pike Place Market.  However, it is a vibrant intersection of food, smells, people, spices, liquor, and sweets… and defintely the place to go when looking for a tasty, filling, and cheap lunch downtown.

Unlike Pike Place, which is really closer to shopping mall than street market these days, Grand Central Market’s wares consist almost exclusively of food and drink.  Besides the produce trucked in locally  from around the southland, and the rows of fresh meat and seafood, the stalls are packed with vendors of made-to-order eats.  The fare is mainly different flavors of east Asia and Mexico (it is California after all), but middle eastern, grill, and desserts can also be found.

It was hard to choose (I was eyeing the blacken whole tilapia… head and all), but last Saturday morning, I got the craving for a real taco… “Uh… taco por favor?… pollo… si, con todos, everything!… salsa? uh… roja.  Er… cuanto?  Dos?!  Sweeeeeet….“  So for $2, I stumbled my way into getting a rather large chicken taco, wrapped with onions, cilantro, and pico de gallo in a warm tortilla, and drenched in spicy salsa.  And I’m seriously not kidding about large… check out the load of fire-grilled chicken the guy was chopping for my taco in the image at right.  Mmmmmm, best… taco… ever.

After lunch there’s plenty to wash it down.  Choose from standard sodas and juices to exotic fruit concoctions with shady names, a nice cool horchata or tamarindo, or one of the most well-stocked bars around (see photo).  Oh, and don’t forget dessert; at least one of the vendors has a glass display lined with pies, cakes, tarts, and other sundries to satisfy the sweet tooth.

With no shortage of tastes, and sitting just a quick walk from the central part of downtown and a Red Line subway station, Grand Central Market is a perfect, quick, and authentically Los Angelino lunch stop on your busy day of exploring the city.

A Sea (Gate) of External Drives

Any photographer these days could use massive and redundant data storage… and for a limited time, the noted quality driver maker SeaGate is practically giving it away.  I just snagged the 500GB FreeAgent external drive with automated backup software on sale for $99.00!!!  Can we say, “w00t”?

I Can Hear the Bells….

Last fall I was asked to do my first wedding as an official photographer… I said I’d have to think about it.  For those of you thinking, wow, wedding photography sounds like a lot of fun and it makes a lot of money, I totally want to do one, well, I encourage you take some time to really consider it.  Photographing someone’s wedding, even a friend’s, is a huge deal — both it terms of work and pressure; after all, this is a once in a lifetime moment for the bride and groom, and YOU can either make it that much more special, or screw it up BIG TIME if you’re not on your game.  Not to mention the additional equipment you will need if you’ve never done a wedding shoot before, and the UNGODLY number of hours it takes to do the shoot and post processing.  However, the end results can be very rewarding.  And yes, if you put in the work to get a nice portfolio together, weddings can make you a decent amount of money from your photography.

Since this was my first time ever doing a wedding, I agreed to do the job only as a secondary photographer… that is, I encouraged the bride and groom (my roommates) to find someone experienced for at least the posted portraits.  Then I would do the portraits as well in my own way, as well as the preparation, event, and reception.  This way, if I screwed up, at least the posed portraits would be there!

The bodies used were my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi and my Canon EOS Elan 7ne 35mm, the latter loaded with Kodak Pro Tri-X 400 black and white film.  The lenses I used were my stock Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM, as well as a rented Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 prime from borrowlenses.com (about $50 for a 1 week rental, roundtrip shipping, and insurance).  I chose to do film because I really like the look I can get with certain types; if I had my choice I’d probably do all portraiture in film, but again, this was a wedding, I couldn’t afford to wait until development to find out if I screwed up a shot, so I used both film and digital.  This worked pretty well actually.  I chose Kodak Pro Tri-X 400 for the crisp look and excellent exposure latitude; indeed, Tri-X 400 was originally a popular journalism film, and is thus great at capturing details and expressions on the fly.

The 85mm on the Elan worked great for the portrait shots, but I really was wishing for something wider when it came time for the reception… I had the 28-105mm mounted on the XTi, but switching the lens back and forth between the two would have been a pain.  Something to keep in mind for the next time, maybe an 85mm for the portraits and a 50mm for later.

If you are considering shooting a wedding, you will need at least two camera bodies each with their own lenses.  If something breaks, the middle of a wedding is not the time to be stuck without any capability.  Also, mounting different lenses on similar camera bodies allows for quick switching between the two; fumbling at lens switching could cost you an important shot, or cause you to drop half a paycheck worth of lens in your hurry… not cool.

Not everyone can afford portable studio lighting for the portraits, including me.  But consider a good, configurable, hotshoe-mount flash with a diffuser and bounce capability as the bare minimum for lighting.  If you’re a fellow Canon user, the Speedlite 430EX (something like $240) with a generic-brand diffuser worked splendidly.  You may able to get by with one of the lower models, but the ETTL-II link to the camera, manual zoom on the flash head, and the adjustable nature of the head for bouncing were godsends.  And a related tip: know how to use the thing BEFORE wedding day.  Hotshoe flashes like the 430EX have a lot of features and quirks… practice several times on subjects in different lighting conditions to get the hang of them.

Get there super early and plan on leaving well after the main event.  Not only is it good to be on time, especially in an area you don’t know well, but some of the best shots aren’t actually to be found in the wedding itself.  Capturing fun moments in the preparation, the families catching up, and other behind-the-scenes action can lend more of a spontaneous human element to an otherwise very rehearsed affair.

Check and re-check your equipment!  Do not leave ANYTHING for the day-of.  The Irony Gods are just waiting to flick your work into oblivion.  I went in with 2x redundancy on camera bodies and lenses, 8x redundancy on batteries for flash and cameras, 3x redundancy on expected memory card capacity needed, 2x redundancy on color and black and white film, and a laptop for immediate backups.  Beg, borrow, buy, or rent additional equipment to obtain redundancy, it is neither optional nor replaceable!  Even if you think you know your equipment, weddings throw brand new situations at you.  Bring your manuals, and know your custom functions (cameras and flash units).  Check custom functions and other camera settings the night before, and try some test shots on random people traveling with you, if possible.  On the XTi, I set my own picture modes under the user-defined categories… experiment well beforehand to find settings that look good, it saves a lot of post-processing work later.

Make sure you can carry everything comfortably (a backpack camera equipment bag would have been nice) and keep everything DRY in case of drizzle or rain… if the bride and groom want to keep going, you have to keep going too!

Whew!  Quite the list of lessons learned… and I haven’t even gotten to post-processing!  Long story short, weddings are a metric crap-ton of work, and there is a reason wedding photographers charge what they do.  I did this one for free (actually Liz paid for half of the new flash) just to get the experience and some shots for a portfolio, but next time…. oof.   As a friendly piece of advice: even for a friend, know what you are getting into before saying yes… and hopefully this post helps.  Photographing weddings is a lot of fun if you’ve done your preliminary work well, and I’m really glad I got the opportunity to learn from this one.  Congrats Darin and Liz, I’m glad you liked how the photos turned out!

Wahoo!

Sweeeeeet… looks like the transfer over to the new domain and the WordPress blog worked quite smoothly.  I like the new look, and I hope you do too!  I may not have worked out all the kinks yet… if you notice something weird, please let me know, either by commenting on this thread (preferred) or by sending me an email (nalin at qcowboyphotodot com).

On the queue for stuff to post soon:

1. I just went early this morning down to PCH to get some early morning shots of the coast.  Those are in post-process as we speak…

2. Hung out in LA afterward, and got some shots of Grand Central Market and St. Vincent Ct, two interesting and historic districts in Los Angeles.

3. Awhile ago I took a historic podcast tour of Los Angeles, and snapped some shots with the old Pentax… turns out I was out of batteries, and didn’t have a light meter for the first time.  Stay tuned for my first experiments with photography sans electronic help!

Gallery and Print Ordering

Ok, so the gallery has moved back from Flickr to ExposureManager… enough people have asked whether or not I sell prints before, and the recent wedding shoot has sort of pushed the potential demand up further, so I’m back to selling prints if anyone is interested. Please click the Gallery link at right on the navigation bar or point your browser to www.qcowboyphoto.com.

I eventually plan to merge the blog and gallery into one site at the new domain, though I don’t see this as immediately necessary.

Almost done with the wedding photos… whew, I can see now why wedding photographers charge what they do… As per a license agreement, I will be posting certain images to the public portfolio folder on the gallery. About 260 digital keepers, and 59 Kodak Pro Tri-X 400 film keepers (out of 61… get *that* ratio on your digital…). Some of the better ones will be blogged about here of course.

Update

Long time no update…. but now that theater is over for the summer, I’ve had a lot more time to devote to photography.

Upcoming soon: my first wedding shoot (w00t!), a historical tour of LA (done in black and white film with no light meter), and some shots from the beautiful mountain areas off of CA-126.

Poppies, my pretty, poppies!

Spring poppies bloom in the Antelope Valley.

No wicked witch here to add a bit of danger, but the colors at the poppy reserve a couple of weeks ago were fantastic. The Antelope Valley California State Poppy Reserve blooms every spring in an explosion of wildflowers, mainly in the yellow, orange, and purple range. The orange ones are, of course, the state flower and Dorothy’s bane, the poppy.

There’s a fair amount of wind out there during the day, so unless you get out there real early, plan on using fast shutter speeds and Image Stabilization if you’ve got it. During the blooming season, there is a fair amount of traffic out there, and you’ll find it impossible to get shots without any people in them (again, unless you get out there early morning). However, in a lot of the ones I took, the people added a great sense of perspective and scale, so it really isn’t all a bad thing.

The flowers attract plenty of interesting insects and beautiful butterflies on the leeward sides of the hills, which means the birds that eat them are around too. Bring both a long and a short lens because of this. Landscapes traditionally call for wide angle, but this and every other shot on the roll are with my 70-300… its a matter of framing, and if course Image Stabilization is a bonus. The circular polarizer really makes those clouds pop against a darkened blue sky.

Only three uploaded for now, more on the way as I get them through the scanner and PSPXI for cropping, straightening, and some sharpening to compensate for my crappy scanner…. no saturation boost necessary for these colors! Superia is great at getting true warm colors anyway, so I hardly ever need any at all, unlike the XTi, which needs some fiddling in post-process.

Get out there fast, the blooms won’t last long!

Red Rock in Black and White

We started the day early, leaving Palmcaster around 6:30am. I knew sunrise was at about 7:30, but wasn’t really looking to catch the event itself… that magical morning light that photographer always rave about on forums is what I was after. From previous experience, my Nissan Sentra I knew was not the best offroading vehicle, so this time around I managed to convince my friend Andrew that we should take his truck and try it out on the rugged roads of the Red Rock backcountry, on the CA-14 just north of the California City junction.

About the time we reached Mojave, everyone in the truck (Andrew drove) was in a bad way for some breakfast and coffee, so we stopped and acquired a hefty supply of both. When we arrived at the cliffs, full and caffeinated, the soft light of the early to mid morning was perfect. We left the truck in a clearing and began walking the blasted terrain.

It was like an alien world… dead silence but for a slight beeeze and the occasional conversation, fantastic rock formations, and all over specimens of those hardy yet beautiful species that want to live enough to thrive in the desert. A large part of the park, especially near the cliffs, was closed to visitors due to raptor breeding season…. note to self, bring the telephoto in the summer!

I chose this photo to blog about because you can see the range of capability for the film. There are some possibly more interesting shots on my Flickr gallery.

I LOVE THIS FILM!!!! Note the wide range of tonal detail; exposing for the middle tones, this film gets you true black in the crevices at left, and a nice luster on the brighter cliff walls at right. What grain you might be able to make out probably reflects more on the quality of my scanner than the film, as the prints I have are brilliant.

Ilford Pan-F 50 cost me $7.50/36 at King Photo. Post-processing true black and white film is more expensive than normal 35mm color film. If I recall right, it was about $12.00 for developing and a contact sheet, and something like $1.30 per 4×6.

I just bought another roll…. can’t wait to use this film again!

Last month I took a trip up to Red Rock to try out this new film I found, Ilford Pan-F 50. But wouldn’t you know it, I left the film at home… Doh! Luckily I had taken my XTi along as a sighting/backup body, so I was still able to shoot. Here is one of the better ones.

Lunar Eclipse

The moon tinged orange from the eclipse.

For those of you who didn’t look to the sky on Wednesday, you missed a great show. A total lunar eclipse, which won’t happen again for three years, bathed the full moon in a red hue… spectacular hanging up there on a clear desert night.

This shot was taken in a great hurry believe it or not. I was late for rehearsal (starts at 7pm on Wednesdays) but I couldn’t resist grabbing the tripod out of the trunk to set up a few shots. I only got six or seven before I had to run, and I think this is one of the best.

Had I time, I would have tried to set up a shot of it with the mountains as a foreground, or perhaps a Joshua tree… oh well. Do what you can right? Good thing I had my camera with me on the off chance the shuttle might land at Edwards that day… no luck on that, but got this shot out of it!
